There is a lot of noise out there around GenAI, transformers and LLMs. A lot of vendors are selling tools with fuzzy use cases attached.

Here at Replan, we’ve been working in advanced algorithms, data science and AI for almost 15 years and it’s clear that hype cycles come and go. At the end of the day these are simply software tools and ultimately it’s the use cases that matter.

So here’s our list of the specific Use Cases where GenAI will have a meaningful impact supply planning:

  1. Risk Management: Not all manufacturers have the resources to assess large datasets of historical data, prior market conditions, ongoing weather patterns, and geopolitical events. But every manufacturer wants to identify potential supply chain risks. Previously the preserve of larger organizations with in-house data science teams, we predict that this will be democratized into core Planning and Scheduling tools across the market. It will be interesting to see if manufacturers get excited and whether benefits will trickle down to the mid-market players. The impact? Supply Chain teams might see many more risk signals, but distinguishing them from all the extra noise created will be hard work.
  2. Demand Forecasting: Using LLMs to digest and analyze a combination of structured and unstructured sales data, customer commentary, market trends, and organizational knowledge to enhance demand forecasts. Will this enhance forecast accuracy? Perhaps. Already visible with vendors like Logility and MS Dynamics Copilots but remains to be seen whether these tools are making the process easier or fundamentally improving the forecasting capabilities of companies.
  3. Production Planning and Scheduling: Localized LLMs have the potential to make Planners lives far more efficient by enhancing alerting systems and improving schedulers’ contextual understanding of operations in real time. Further enhancements in conversational interfaces and customized chatbots will remove tedious excel manipulation and endless business intelligence work. Significantly undercooked at the moment with not a lot of public focus from vendors but watch this space!
  4. Scenario planning: Gen AI can be used to analyze historical and real-time data, market dynamics, and external factors, thereby facilitating comprehensive scenario planning. By conducting scenario simulations and considering various parameters such as demand fluctuations and supply chain disruptions, Gen AI can help planners anticipate potential outcomes and devise proactive strategies. Again this is another area that feels under reported by Vendors but to us here at Replan a clear opportunity to create value.

As the industry thinks about the transformative potential of Gen AI, manufacturers stand poised to unlock greater levels of operational optimization and resilience. The future of supply chain management might be driven by the revolutionary capabilities of GenAI, provided effort is focused on the right use cases.
